Prebiodunes International Environmental Initiative

Prebiodunes International Environmental Initiative

PREBIODUNES is an international environmental initiative focused on the restoration and
preservation of coastal dune ecosystems across the Mediterranean. These ecosystems are among the most threatened habitats due to climate change (sea-level rise), coastal erosion, and unsustainable human pressure (tourism and construction).

The project aims to implement nature - based solutions to strengthen coastal resilience, protect unique biodiversity, and promote asustainable model for managing coastal areas.

The Role of OAA in the Project
As a key local partner in Albania, the OAA plays a vital role in ensuring the project’s success onthe ground. Its responsibilities include:

- Scientific Monitoring and Research: OAA conducts detailed field surveys to identify
the current state of dune flora and fauna, focusing on rare and endemic species that are
critical for the ecosystem’s health.

- Implementation of Restoration Measures: The organization leads practical
interventions, such as the installation of protective barriers to reduce sand erosion and the
reforestation of dunes with native vegetation to stabilize the soil.

- Public Awareness and Media Engagement: Through its platform Mjedisi.al and the
Mbronat podcast, OAA educates the local community, stakeholders, and tourists about
the vital importance of dunes as natural shields against climate change.

- Opposing Harmful Infrastructure: OAA acts as a watchdog, ensuring that the of
unique biodiversity of the costal strips are not compromised by unregulated tourism
projects.

The dunes of Karpen and Spille are more than scenic landscapes: they are vital natural systems that protect the coastline from erosion and host unique biodiversity. This study, coordinated by Prof. Tania Floqi, is a key result of the Prebiodunes project, developed to enhance dune conservation and promote sustainable coastal management in the Adriatic–Ionian region.
